Highclere Castle Day Trips from London

Four shared departures, and every one of them carries entry to the castle in the fare. That is the thing that separates them from the private cars, and it is why this is the simplest way to visit.

What a Highclere Castle day trip from London actually is

A shared vehicle, a fixed departure from a named London meeting point, a guide for the day, and — on all four of these — a castle ticket already bought in your name. You turn up, get on, and someone else has solved the two hard parts: reaching rural Hampshire and getting through the front door.

Two vehicle sizes exist here. A mini coach or minibus capped at around sixteen, and a full-size coach carrying more. Both cover the same ground; the difference is how the group moves through the state rooms once you arrive.

Why choose a shared day trip

Castle admission is included on every one

Every one of these carries entry in the fare. That matters more here than at most attractions, because Highclere publishes its own warning that a third-party Downton Abbey tour may not include a visit — and several departures elsewhere do exclude it. None of those is listed here.

The transport problem disappears

There is no station at Highclere and no bus to the gate. A shared day removes the drive, the Newbury taxi and the return cab you would otherwise have to book by telephone.

It is the cheapest way in

Per person, a coach seat with entrance fees included undercuts every private fare here, and undercuts most combinations of train, taxi and admission bought separately.

The villages come with it

Every one of these includes Bampton, the Oxfordshire village that plays Downton itself, and one adds Cogges Manor Farm. Reaching either by public transport is genuinely awkward.

What you get, and what you don't

Included on each: round-trip transport from London, a live guide, and entry to Highclere Castle. Most add a guided walk around Bampton, and one adds Cogges Manor Farm and Bampton Library on top.

Not included on any of them: lunch.

There is no meal in any of these fares. The Coach House tearooms at the castle serve food, and Bampton has places to eat, but plan for it rather than assuming. Gratuities are excluded across the board, and on one departure the Egyptian Exhibition costs five pounds extra on arrival.

Hotel pickup is excluded throughout. You reach the meeting point yourself, which for the Gloucester Road departures means a tube ride and for the Marble Arch one a short walk.

Who should choose something else

The full comparison, private and shared together, is on Highclere Castle Tours.

Still weighing coach against minibus?

The difference shows up inside the house: sixteen people move through the state rooms together, a full coach moves through in shifts.

Frequently asked questions

Do all Highclere Castle day trips from London include admission?
These shared departures do — each names entry to the castle in its own inclusions. Some private tours and transfers exclude it, so check the card rather than the title.
How long is a day trip to Highclere Castle?
Nine hours for the castle and Bampton, or eleven if the itinerary adds Cogges Manor Farm and the Cotswolds. Roughly four of those hours are spent travelling.
Where do these tours leave from?
Three meet at Gloucester Road Underground station, by the flower shop outside the exit. The Cotswolds day meets outside the Cumberland Hotel at Marble Arch.
Is lunch included?
No, on any of them. The castle's Coach House tearooms serve food and there are places to eat in Bampton, but budget for it separately.
Which day trip is cheapest?
The full-size coach departure, at $189 per person with entrance fees included and fast-track entry. It is non-refundable, which is part of why it is cheaper.
Can I cancel a day trip?
It depends which one. One refunds in full up to 24 hours before, one closes its window 14 days out, and two are non-refundable from the moment you book.
