Highclere is a family home that opens on selected dates, not a house you can turn up at. Here is when it is open, what you will pay, and how to get there without wasting a day — all of it read off the castle's own pages rather than last season's guidebook.

When Highclere Castle is open — and when it is not

The castle sets aside two periods of general admission each year, the Easter holidays and the summer holidays. Outside those windows it is not shut so much as differently open: it runs themed guided tours in small numbers, and Christmas at Highclere fills late November and December. Every one of those needs a ticket bought in advance.

This is the fact that catches people out. There is no month when you can simply drive over and pay at a gate, and the published calendar rarely runs more than a few months ahead.

What a ticket costs in 2026

Two quite different products sit behind the price you will see quoted, which is why the figures on other sites disagree so wildly.

So £25 and £145 are both correct: one is a general-admission day, the other is a small guided tour with food and a book folded in. 2027 public-opening dates and prices had not been published when this page was last checked.

Getting to Highclere Castle without a car

There is no station at Highclere and no bus to the gate, which is the single biggest practical problem with visiting. Your options, in the order most people use them:

By train to Newbury

Trains run from London Paddington to Newbury, and taxis wait outside the station. The run out to the castle takes about fifteen minutes, and fares change on Sundays and bank holidays.

By train to Andover or Whitchurch

From London Waterloo you can reach Andover, roughly twenty minutes from the castle by taxi, or Whitchurch in Hampshire, about ten minutes away. Whitchurch is closer but the fares run higher because it is remote, and there is rarely a cab sitting outside.

The bit that catches people out

Taxis do not wait at the castle. You need to book your return by telephone before you want it, and the castle names three local firms it recommends without taking any commission. Leave that until you are standing at the gate at five o'clock and you will have a long wait.

By tour or transfer

Most visitors from London skip all of that and let somebody else drive. A Highclere Castle day trip from London bundles the driving with a guide, and a private Highclere Castle tour puts a car at your door. Two of the transfers we list will pick up at Heathrow.

Driving, and why your sat nav will get it wrong

The castle is west of London near the M4 and Newbury, with Oxford to the north and Winchester to the south. Highclere asks visitors plainly not to use sat nav once they are close, because it routes you to the wrong entrance. Follow the brown tourist signs from the A34 instead.

If you must use a sat nav, there are two postcodes and they are not interchangeable:

• RG20 9LE — the approach. Use this, then follow the brown signs to the main entrance.
• RG20 9RN — the postal address. Correct for letters, wrong for driving.

How long to allow

Three hours on site is a comfortable visit. Guided tours start at 10:30am and 1:30pm, and you are asked to gather at the castle's front door ten minutes before.

What you cannot bring inside

• Large rucksacks, prams and pushchairs cannot go into the castle or the Egyptian Exhibition. Storage is provided, at your own risk, and a pushchair may be left in the front hall if there is room.
• Drones are banned across the whole estate — castle, gardens, grounds and the wider parkland.
• Smart glasses and meta glasses are now banned on the same terms. That rule is newer than most guides to visiting.
• Picnics are not allowed in the gardens. You are welcome to eat one back at your car.
• Dogs may use the public footpaths across part of the estate on a lead, because of grazing livestock, but not the castle, exhibition or gardens. Assistance dogs are the exception, with notice.

Photography rules, in one line each

• Inside the castle: no photography or videography.
• Inside the Egyptian Exhibition: no photography or videography.
• Grounds, lawns and gardens: yes, for personal use.
• Anything commercial: needs written agreement from the estate first.

Accessibility at Highclere Castle

The main state rooms and the Egyptian Exhibition are reachable in a manual wheelchair, and the castle keeps a small number that can be pre-booked. Three limits are worth knowing early:

• Motorised wheelchairs are not permitted inside the castle.
• There is no escort service — a companion has to push, and a wheelchair cannot be left anywhere in the house.
• The upstairs Gallery is reached by a long, steep staircase and is only for those who can manage it unaided at a reasonable pace. Photograph albums of those bedrooms are kept in the Saloon for everyone else.
