Experience of a Lifetime

Walk the staircase Lady Mary descended on her wedding day, then learn the real history of the 5th Earl and Tutankhamun's tomb in the cellars below.

About Highclere Castle

Highclere Castle has stood on this site in one form or another since 749, when an Anglo-Saxon king granted the estate to the Bishops of Winchester. The Jacobethan mansion you see today was rebuilt between 1842 and 1849 by Sir Charles Barry — the same architect behind the Houses of Parliament — and has been home to the Earls of Carnarvon since 1679. Join us for tours that go past the Downton Abbey storylines into the real history of the Herbert family and the rooms they still live in today.

History

The 5th Earl of Carnarvon, George Herbert, financed archaeologist Howard Carter's 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. During the First World War, Highclere became a military hospital run by the 5th Countess, who served as a nurse. Today the castle is home to the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, who opened it to paying visitors to help fund its restoration.

Access

Highclere Castle opens to the public only on selected dates each year — not daily — so tickets sell out well in advance during peak periods. Booking a guided tour or pre-purchased ticket avoids arriving on a day the castle is closed, which has happened to visitors who didn't check first.

Architecture & Layout

The castle's Jacobethan towers and Bath stone façade sit above cellars that now house the Egyptian Exhibition. Inside, the Saloon features 17th-century Spanish leather wall coverings, and the Music Room is hung with 16th-century Italian embroideries — both visible on tours of the state rooms.

Highclere Castle Tours Reviews

★★★★★

Our guide Eva made the small-group tour feel personal even with 16 people — she knew which scenes were filmed in which rooms and gave us real history alongside it. The library was the highlight for me.

Sarah M. — Solo traveller, May 2026
★★★★☆

The Egyptian Exhibition in the cellars surprised us — we went expecting Downton Abbey and left more interested in the 5th Earl's archaeology. Worth budgeting extra time for, which our guide hadn't mentioned upfront.

David & Helen R. — Couple, April 2026
★★★★★

Travelled with my parents and the Cogges Manor Farm stop was a nice change of pace before the castle. Three hours inside Highclere felt like plenty of time — we even sampled the Highclere Gin.

James T. — Family group, March 2026
★★★★☆

The black cab tour was worth the extra cost over a coach — our driver Andrew played a few episode clips on the way and pointed out exactly which window belonged to which character's bedroom. The afternoon tea stop ran a little long, but nobody in our group minded.

Claudia B. — Couple, Germany, May 2026
★★★★★

First time in England and we did the Oxford and Highclere combo. The Bridge of Sighs in Oxford was a highlight I wasn't expecting, and the castle's main hall genuinely looks bigger in person than it does on screen. Our guide Frank kept the whole group of 60 engaged, which can't have been easy.

Marco P. — Solo traveller, Italy, April 2026
★★★★★

Booked the small-group tour and the self-guided time in the library was my favourite part — no rushing, no crowds blocking the view of the bookshelves. Bring cash for the gift shop afterwards; some of the smaller items aren't on card-only tills.

Rebecca G. — Repeat visitor, June 2026
★★★★★

We did the Stonehenge and Highclere combo as a group of eight and it worked well logistically — Stonehenge in the morning, lunch on the road, castle in the afternoon. Our guide handled the timing without making either stop feel rushed, which I was worried about going in.

Tomasz K. — Group, Poland, May 2026
★★★★☆

Good tour overall, though I'd recommend checking the castle's open dates yourself before booking — ours was originally scheduled for a date Highclere was closed and our operator had to rebook us. Once we actually got there, the Egyptian Exhibition in the cellars was more interesting than I expected.

Linda M. — Couple, USA, March 2026
★★★★★

Did the pub lunch tour and The Trout at Tadpole Bridge was a genuinely good stop, not just a tourist trap. Our guide poured us a taste of the Highclere Castle Gin once we got to the grounds, which was a nice unexpected touch at the end of a long day.

Everything You Need to Plan Your Highclere Castle Visit

FAQs

Highclere Castle Tours: Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Highclere Castle tours cost?

Guided day tours from London start around $195 per person and include castle admission. Private tours range from roughly $750 to over $1,200 per group, depending on group size and whether castle admission is included. Self-purchased admission alone starts at £25 per adult.

Do I need to book Highclere Castle tours in advance?

Yes. Highclere Castle only opens to the public on selected dates each year, and both tours and direct tickets sell out well ahead of the date, especially in July and August. Book at least 2–4 weeks in advance during the summer opening period.

Is photography allowed inside Highclere Castle?

No. Photography and videography are not permitted inside the castle or the Egyptian Exhibition. You're welcome to take photos on the grounds and gardens for personal use.

Does every tour include castle admission?

No — some private transfers and tours sell transport only, with castle tickets purchased separately. Check the "what's included" list on each tour card before booking; we flag this explicitly where it applies.

Can I bring my dog to Highclere Castle?

Dogs are welcome on public footpaths through the estate, but not inside the castle, exhibition, or gardens — guide dogs are the only exception, and advance notice is requested.

What's included in the Egyptian Exhibition?

The exhibition, located in the castle's cellars, displays artefacts and replicas connected to the 5th Earl of Carnarvon's funding of Howard Carter's 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. It's included with the "Castle, Exhibition & Gardens" ticket, not the basic "Castle & Gardens" ticket.

How do I get to Highclere Castle from London?

Highclere is roughly 90 minutes from central London by car. Most visitors either drive, join a coach or small-group tour with transport included, or book a private transfer — there's no train station directly at the castle.

Is Highclere Castle the real Downton Abbey?

Yes. Highclere Castle has been the primary filming location for Downton Abbey since production began in 2010, used across six television series and multiple feature films.

What's the difference between coach, small-group, and private tours?

Coach tours run up to 75 travellers and are the most affordable option. Small-group tours cap around 16-18 people for a more personal pace. Private tours are limited to your own group, typically 4-8 people, with full flexibility over timing.

Can I visit Highclere Castle without joining a tour?

Yes, you can book admission tickets directly through the castle's official site and arrange your own transport. Most visitors choose a tour instead simply because Highclere's rural location makes independent travel less convenient.
