Do I need to book Highclere Castle tours in advance?
Yes, and not only for the tour. Highclere sells every ticket ahead of time and there is no booth at the gate, so a tour that includes admission is holding a slot bought weeks earlier. Popular dates go early, especially around the summer opening and Christmas.
Do all the tours include entry to the castle?
No, and the castle says so itself: it warns that an all-inclusive Downton Abbey tour from a third-party company may not actually include a visit. Of the tours listed here, five cover admission and four do not. Every card states which, and the ones that leave it out tell you to buy your ticket from the castle first.
Which tour is best for a first visit?
A small-group day with admission included is the simplest first visit, because the ticket, the driving and the timing are all handled for you. If you would rather set your own pace, a private car covers the same ground without a group. Both give you around two hours inside.
Is a private tour worth the extra cost?
It depends how many of you there are. Private cars here are priced per vehicle rather than per person, so a fare that looks steep for one lands close to a coach seat once four or six share it. You also get hotel pickup and no fixed meeting time to reach.
Can I cancel a Highclere Castle tour if my plans change?
It depends on the tour, and the spread is wider than most people expect. Several refund in full up to 24 hours before departure, one closes its window 14 days ahead, and three are non-refundable from the moment you book. Each card carries its own policy.
How far in advance do tours sell out?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most dates, and longer over the summer opening, Christmas and any weekend with a themed event. The constraint is usually the castle rather than the coach, because admission slots are capped.
Are these tours suitable for large groups?
Coach departures take the largest numbers, small-group minibuses cap at sixteen, and private cars carry two to six. If there are thirty or more of you buying admission directly, Highclere treats that as a group booking through the Castle Office rather than the website.
Can I book a tour at the last minute?
Sometimes, but it is the riskiest way to do it. The castle opens on selected dates only, so there is no fallback if the departure you want is full. Booking even a week ahead widens your choice considerably.

How much does it cost to visit Highclere Castle?
The castle's own themed guided tours are £145 per adult and £85 for children aged 4 to 16 and for carers, covering the castle, the Egyptian Exhibition, the gardens and refreshments. General admission on a public-opening day started from £25 in 2026. Children under four go free and need no ticket.
Can I buy tickets directly from the castle?
Yes, through the castle's own online shop, and for many visitors that is the right answer. The catch is that those tickets are strictly non-refundable and valid only for the date and time printed on them, whereas most guided tours refund at 24 hours.
Is the Egyptian Exhibition included in the ticket?
On the castle's own guided tours, yes. On tours booked through operators it varies: one small-group day charges £5 extra for it on arrival, while a Cotswolds departure folds it into the fare. The exhibition sits in the cellars and holds finds from the 5th Earl's work in Egypt.
Are Highclere Castle tickets refundable?
The castle's terms say admission tickets cannot be exchanged, refunded or returned, and are valid only for the date and admission time specified. A refund appears only if Highclere itself cancels and cannot move you, and then at its discretion. Tour operators set their own, usually more generous, policies.
Do children need a ticket?
Children under four go free and need no ticket at all. From four to sixteen they need a child ticket, which is £85 on the castle's themed guided tours. Pushchairs cannot come inside the castle or the exhibition.
Is there a ticket booth at the castle?
No. Every ticket is bought in advance online, and the castle asks you to check that it is open on your date before you travel. Turning up hoping to pay at the gate does not work.
What is included in a £145 guided tour?
A guided walk through the state rooms and the galleried bedrooms, entry to the Egyptian Exhibition in the cellars, time in the gardens, refreshments in the Coach House tearooms and a signed copy of one of Lady Carnarvon's books. Child tickets at £85 include everything except the book.
When is Highclere Castle open to the public?
On selected dates only. There are two general-admission periods, the Easter holidays and the summer holidays, and outside those the castle runs themed guided tours, with Christmas at Highclere through late November and December. It is not a daily-access attraction.
Visiting practically
How do I get to Highclere Castle from London?
Most visitors drive, join a coach or minibus day tour, or book a private transfer. There is no station at the castle itself. By rail the nearest option is Paddington to Newbury, then a taxi of about fifteen minutes.
Is there a train station nearby?
Newbury is the closest mainline station, roughly fifteen minutes away by taxi, and Andover and Whitchurch are alternatives from Waterloo. Book your return taxi by phone before you need it, because cabs do not wait outside.
How long do I need there?
The castle and exhibition tour runs about an hour and a half to two hours. Add half an hour or so for refreshments and another forty-five minutes for the gardens, and a full visit is comfortably three hours.
Can I take photos inside the castle?
No. Photography and videography are not permitted inside the castle or the Egyptian Exhibition. You are welcome to photograph the grounds, the lawns and the gardens for personal use.
Is Highclere Castle wheelchair accessible?
Partly. The main state rooms and the Egyptian Exhibition are accessible to manual wheelchairs, and a small number can be pre-booked, but motorised wheelchairs are not permitted inside. The upstairs Gallery is reached only by a long, steep staircase, and photo albums of those bedrooms are kept in the Saloon instead.
Can I bring a pushchair?
Not inside the castle or the exhibition. Pushchairs are welcome on the grounds and lawns, and you may leave one in the front hall if there is space, at your own risk.
Can I bring a picnic?
Not into the gardens. You are welcome to eat a picnic back at your car in the car park, and the Coach House tearooms serve food on open days.
Are dogs allowed?
Only on the public footpaths that cross part of the estate, and on a lead because of grazing livestock. Dogs cannot go into the castle, the exhibition or the gardens. Assistance dogs are the exception, with advance notice and the correct livery.
What should I not bring with me?
Large rucksacks, prams and pushchairs cannot go inside the castle or the exhibition, though storage is provided at your own risk. Drones are banned across the whole estate, and so now are smart glasses and meta glasses.
Is this really the house from Downton Abbey?
Yes, for the exteriors and the main state rooms. Highclere is a real family home in Hampshire that stood in for Downton throughout the series and the films. The below-stairs kitchens and servants' quarters you see on screen were built as sets elsewhere.
The castle itself
Who lives at the castle today?
The Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. The family has held the estate since Sir Robert Sawyer bought it in 1679, and Lady Carnarvon writes about running the house in her books and on her own blog.
How many rooms does it have?
Between 250 and 300, by the castle's own count. A visit takes in the main state rooms, some of the bedrooms, and then the cellars where the Egyptian Exhibition is displayed.
Why is there an Egyptian exhibition at a Hampshire castle?
Because the 5th Earl of Carnarvon funded and joined the search that found Tutankhamun's tomb. He spent some sixteen years working in Egypt with Howard Carter before they reached the sealed door in 1922. The exhibition in the cellars tells that story and shows finds from earlier digs.
Can you stay overnight on the estate?
Not in the castle itself, but the estate lets cottages and the castle's own shop takes those bookings. Most visitors treat Highclere as a day out from London or a stop on a wider trip through Hampshire and the Cotswolds.
