How to Visit Highclere Castle in 2026

When you can actually get in
This is where most guides go wrong, because they describe Highclere as though it were a National Trust property you can visit on a Tuesday. It is not. It is a family home that opens its doors on a published set of dates and closes them again.
There are two windows of general admission each year, the Easter holidays and the summer holidays. Around those, the castle runs themed guided tours in small numbers — an autumn programme, a Christmas season that fills late November and December, and guided tours through January and February. Every one of them needs a ticket bought in advance.
The practical consequence: check the castle is open on your date before you book anything else. Flights, hotels and a tour are all easier to move than Highclere's calendar.
What a ticket costs, and why the figures disagree
Search for the price and you will find £25 on one site and £145 on another. Both are right, because they are different products.

2027 public-opening dates and prices had not been published when this was last checked, so treat the £25 as a 2026 figure rather than a promise about next spring.
The thing nobody tells you about tour tickets
Highclere publishes a warning on its own ticket page that is worth quoting because it is so unusual for an attraction to say it: if you buy an all-inclusive Downton Abbey tour from a third-party company, it may not actually include a visit to the castle.
We checked that against every listing we cover. It is true. Some fares cover admission and some leave you to buy it yourself, and the difference is not obvious from the tour name — several tours with "Highclere Castle" in the title exclude entry to it.
Getting there from London
There is no station at Highclere and no bus to the gate, which is the single biggest practical problem with visiting.
By train
Paddington to Newbury is the usual route, and taxis wait outside Newbury station. The run out takes about fifteen minutes. From Waterloo you can also reach Andover, roughly twenty minutes away, or Whitchurch in Hampshire, about ten — closer, but dearer and with no rank outside.
The return leg
Taxis do not wait at the castle. You must telephone for one before you want it, and the castle names three local firms it recommends without taking a commission from any of them. Leave it until you are standing at the gate and you will wait.
By car
The castle asks you plainly not to use sat nav once you are close, because it routes you to the wrong entrance. Use RG20 9LE to get near, then follow the brown tourist signs from the A34. RG20 9RN is the postal address and will send you somewhere else.
By tour
Most visitors let somebody else drive. A coach or minibus day handles the ticket, the timing and the driving in one, and a private car does the same without a group.
How long to allow
- Castle and Egyptian Exhibition tour: about 1 hour 30 to 2 hours.
- Refreshments in the Coach House tearooms: 30 to 45 minutes.
- The gardens: about 45 minutes, weather allowing.
- Total, comfortably: three hours on site.
Guided tours start at 10:30 and 13:30 and you gather at the front door ten minutes before. Gates close at 5pm in autumn and 4pm in January and February.
What you cannot bring inside
A short list, and it catches people out every season:
- Large rucksacks, prams and pushchairs cannot go into the castle or the exhibition. Storage is provided at your own risk.
- Drones are banned across the whole estate.
- Smart glasses and meta glasses are banned on the same terms — a newer rule than most guides mention.
- Picnics are not allowed in the gardens, though you may eat one at your car.
- Dogs may use the estate footpaths on a lead, but not the castle, exhibition or gardens.
Photography
You cannot photograph the interiors. Not on any tour, not at any time. The grounds, lawns and gardens are fine for personal use. It is the rule visitors mind most, and knowing it in advance takes the sting out of it. Our gallery covers what you can shoot.
Accessibility
The main state rooms and the Egyptian Exhibition take a manual wheelchair, and a small number can be pre-booked. Motorised wheelchairs are not permitted inside. There is no escort service, so a companion must push. The upstairs Gallery is reached only by a long, steep staircase; if you cannot manage it, albums of those bedrooms are kept in the Saloon.
One private car we list is wheelchair accessible, which none of the shared coaches are.
Which tour to book
It comes down to this: are you sharing a vehicle, and is the ticket in the fare? A shared minibus with admission included is the simplest first visit. A private car costs more on paper and less per head once four or six of you share it. If you already hold a castle ticket, a transfer just solves the driving.
