The real question

Almost every day tour from London bundles Highclere Castle with the Oxfordshire villages that play Downton on screen. The bundle is presented as a bonus. It is not free: an eleven-hour day costs you two hours more than a nine-hour one, and most of that difference is spent on the village half.

So the question is not "are the villages nice". It is whether you would rather spend those hours in Bampton or back in London.

The case for the castle alone

The house is the thing that cannot be substituted. The Saloon, the Library and the State Dining Room are the real rooms, and the Egyptian Exhibition in the cellars has no equivalent anywhere. It also has a hard constraint the villages do not: it opens on selected dates, so if your date works, using it on the castle is the safer choice.

A private car or the castle's own guided tour both give you longer inside than a coach schedule allows — three hours rather than two on one of the private days. If the interiors are what you came for, that is where the extra money goes.

The case for the villages

Here is the honest part. A great deal of what you picture as "Downton" is not the castle at all. The village street, the church, the pub and the cottage hospital are Bampton in Oxfordshire, forty-odd minutes away, and Yew Tree Farm is Cogges Manor Farm near Witney. If your attachment is to the world of the series rather than the architecture of the house, the villages will move you more than the state rooms will.

They are also open every day and cost nothing to walk around, which cuts both ways: it makes them a generous addition to a tour, and it makes them the easy thing to do on your own another time. The castle is the half with a calendar — see what is on before you assume a date works.

Doing both, and the order that works

Most tours do both, and there is a sensible order. Villages first, castle after lunch, works better than the reverse: the castle's admission slots are timed, so a tour that has to hit a 2pm entry can absorb a slow morning in Bampton but cannot absorb a slow afternoon. Several operators say outright that the itinerary may run in either direction depending on the entry time they hold.

• Travelling with someone who has not watched the series: the bundle again. The villages give them something to look at while you are having your moment in the Library.
• Short on time or energy: nine hours instead of eleven, and accept that you are seeing the castle rather than the world around it.

What the extra two hours actually buy

Put plainly: an eleven-hour tour is a nine-hour tour plus Cogges Manor Farm, a longer stop in Bampton, and more time on the road between Oxfordshire and Hampshire. That is not nothing — Cogges is the on-screen Yew Tree Farm and it charges its own admission, so having it inside a fare has real value. But it is two more hours on a day that already starts early.

Travellers who have done both split predictably. Those who came for the series are glad of the villages. Those who came for the house — and its dates and figures — say the castle stop was the part they wanted lengthened, and one or two say the farm ran long. Doing the villages independently

Worth knowing, because no tour will tell you: Bampton is a public village. The street, the church and the exterior of the library are free to walk around, any day of the year, with no ticket and no opening calendar. If you are driving in the Cotswolds anyway, the village half of this decision costs you nothing but the detour.

The castle is the opposite. It cannot be seen on a whim, it cannot be seen from the road, and it opens on dates somebody else chooses. That asymmetry is the strongest argument for spending a bundled tour's scarce hours on the house and picking the villages up another time.

Opening dates decide it first

Before any of this is a preference, it is a calendar problem. If your dates fall outside a public opening, your options narrow to a themed guided tour or a day tour that holds admission slots — and the villages are open regardless.
