The complete Downton day, and why it runs to eleven hours

Highclere is in Hampshire. Bampton and Cogges are in Oxfordshire. They are not near each other, and that gap is the entire reason this tour is two hours longer than the others. What you get for those two hours is the rest of the world of the series, not just the house at the centre of it.

Cogges Manor Farm is the one most tours leave out. On screen it is Yew Tree Farm; in life it is a working manor farm near Witney that charges its own entry, so having it inside a single fare is worth more than it looks. Bampton Library, still a library, played the cottage hospital, and the village street needs no introduction to anyone who has watched an episode.

At the castle the fare covers the state rooms, the gardens and the Egyptian Exhibition together, which is not true of every departure. Depending on the admission slot the operator holds, the running order can reverse and the villages come after the castle.

Outside the main entrance of the Cumberland Hotel at Marble Arch, formerly the Hard Rock Hotel — worth knowing, because the older name still appears on some maps. It is a short walk from Marble Arch station on the Central line.
