This is the version of the day most people picture when they imagine going to Highclere. You meet at Gloucester Road, board a mini coach, and head west out of London into Hampshire with a guide who talks for most of the way.
What separates it from the cheaper coach departures is not the route, which is similar, but the size of the vehicle and the refund window. Sixteen is small enough that the guide is talking to you rather than announcing to a bus, and it matters inside the house, where a group of fifty has to be split and rotated through the state rooms.
The castle stop is two hours. That covers the Saloon, the state rooms, the galleried bedrooms if you can manage the staircase, and the Egyptian Exhibition down in the cellars, with enough left for the gardens if the weather holds. Bampton follows, and it is a genuine village rather than an attraction — the library that played the cottage hospital is still a library.
If that is you, the eleven-hour Cotswolds day is the better fit.
Gloucester Road Underground station, on the Piccadilly, Circle and District lines. The guide waits by the station exit outside the flower shop, which is a specific enough landmark that people do not miss it, even on a first morning in London.
There is no hotel pickup on this departure. If door-to-door matters more than the price, a private car does that and is compared on the private tours page.
You cannot photograph inside the castle or the exhibition. Shoot the grounds and the gardens instead.
Large rucksacks cannot come into the castle. Storage is available, at your own risk.
There is no lunch in the fare. The Coach House tearooms serve food, or bring something for the coach.
The state rooms and cellars take a manual wheelchair; the upstairs Gallery is a long steep staircase only.
